On Friday I went from one of my largest canine patients to one of my smallest!
I've been helping little Stanley with regular treatment since his spinal surgery a few years back and his owner always asks why he never gets a 'star' patient mention...so here he is getting one!! We won't mention that his behaviour usually doesn't warrant that kind of accolade! But we love him anyway.
Freya, the beautiful Great Dane was seen for the third time. Her owner called me out as she had flipped herself off the sofa then slipped under a table in her excitement when her 'Dad' arrived home. After this incident she was left with a significant head tilt and was struggling to balance, especially when turning. She was seen by the vet who couldn't quite work out what was going on, cleared her for any significant neurological issues and was happy to hand over to me at this point.
Freya was definitely presenting with a lack of balance but there appeared to be no spinal pain and all the neuro tests I performed showed she had good knowledge of where her limbs were so I was happy there didn't appear to be any spinal damage from her fall. So the question then was, why on earth do we have such a head tilt and lack of balance!!?? Her jaw and neck presented with some huge misalignments and significant muscle spasm so we set about addressing this with chiropractic adjustments, massage and also targeted laser treatment. By the third session Freya had completely regained her balance and there was next to no head tilt remaining. The photo here was taken the day after her last session when the head tilt had all but disappeared.
Her owner and I now think that she may have hit her head, possibly effecting her inner ear, and also sustained a 'whiplash' type of injury through the neck as she scrambled to get back up to her feet. It was lovely to see her back to her old self, galloping around the garden I'll be back to check in on her in a couple of months, just to make sure that head tilt hasn't crept back in
